SMTP Protocols

SMTP Protocols are used to connect to e-mail based software
and have nothing to do with a web site.

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol lets you send e-mails from one server
to another where you’re able to receive the e-mails via an email software
program either using POP or IMAP4.

POP stands for Post Office Protocol and is used to retrieve email from
from your mail server to your email program.

IMAP4 stands for Internet Message Access Protocol and works like
the POP protocol but has some additional features like the ability to
search through e-mails..

This Protocol routes messages via the Internet to your mail server.
The mail server location could vary and is either part of your ISP
account or a third party e-mail account like Hotmail or Yahoo mail.

Some popular free e-mail programs today include Eudora and my
favorite Mozilla Firebird. You can do a Google search for other free
e-mail programs if you want to. You might also be able to find web
site software with a built in e-mail client. You also have options of using
the e-mail software your computer has installed and you can purchase
other qaulity e-mail software programs.

Website FTP Details

Website FTP Protocols is used by software that uploads files to a web
server.

The File Transfer Protocol is used by software programs that enable the
end user to upload files to a remote server such as your web site hosting
accounts.

The settings of your hosting account are setup and saved in the software
which then are used by the protocol to connect to your webhosting
account where you can then start uploading your files.

When you first launch the F-T-P softwareprogram, a login screen may appear.

If the login screen is not visible please view the software help file.

This screen should let you add your website information and allow
the F-T-P software program to connect with yourweb hosting server.
You will need to fill in the below information:

Name or Profile Name - This is the name you will use to distinguish your
web site login.

Host Name/Web Site/Address/ F-T-P-Web Site - Add your domain
name here. Example - www.websitebuildersguide.com

Host Type - The standard selection should be Unix. Some software
programs such as F-T-P Voyager do not need this setting.

User ID - Your hosting User ID. Example - websitebuilders

Password - Your web site hosting password.

Depending on which F-T-P software you use, the above information might
vary slightly.

When you’re uploading files you can rename them directly from the
server and you can also CHMOD html or scripting pages. CHMOD
means setting the property of the webpage so it can be read and write
which means it can be edited using some php or asp server side scripting.

Its something you will not need to worry about at this point in time.

There are a variety of software programs available today varying in
price from FREE upto a few dollars.

I have used and recommend  SmartFTP and CoreFTP which were both
FREE during the writing for your Website FTP needs

Website Protocols You May Need to Know

Website Protocols known as IP make Internet communication possible
because it links your pc to your ISP server out to the www. With out
this you will not be able to view a web site.

Firstly in most cases you need to connect to the Internet using a modem
and the you need to have the Transmission Control Protocol/IP (TCP)
setup on your computer.

Networks for large companies have there own Local Area Network
setup which is connected to the internet using a Router.

Windows 3.11, 95 and 98 required manual setups of the TCP/IP.

In most cases windows XP sets this up automatically so it’s a process
you do without realizing using your ISP installation software. Every
Internet surfer needs to have the TCP/IP setup. Most cases this is
automatically done for you without you being aware. BY this stage
you should be able to view a web site.

Through this process you’re either assigned a static IP (IP address
which is like your ID from your ISP) which never changes which
means your activity online can be traced (eg by posting on forums)
or you can be assigned a dynamic IP (which changes each time
you log into the Internet)

A computer you surf from via a web browser is known as a
client machine and the server machine is known as the server
machine. IP’s are like rules which determine how a client machine
and a server machine communicate. These IP’s are built in software
programs like e-mail programs, windows XP, FTO software
and web browsers where you can view a web site.

Without website protocols today and an internet connection it would
not be possible to view a web site.
