Website History

Website History shows that it was formed in 1968 when the Department of Defense created its first global computer network.

The network was called Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) which allowed government and researchers to interact and to work from any location on the network.

It was designed to work under situations like:

  • Bombing Attacks
  • Severe Storms
  • Severe weather
  • Wide spread power failures

There was no central hub which meant that the network would continue to operate if many hosts were disabled.
At this point in time the technology that helped you view web site was not available and was not part of web site history.
In the 80’s the Department of Defense assigned the project to theNational Science Foundation (NSF) in which the NSF increased the number of super computers in Businesses, universities and government web sites to form the backbone as we know it todaythe-Internet.

Even though the infrastructure was in place there was no real way to share information as we do today via a web site. In 1989 Tom Berners Lee along with a few people from CERN invented the HyperText Markup Language (HTML). This invention enabled everyone to share information across networks which we know today as the world wide web via a web site which is viewed in a web browser.

The Internet today has extensive networks that are connected together through out most countries and makes sharing information via a web site easy. This will become part of web site history as time passes.

I have seen many changes since late 1996 and the early days were rough and slow with websites taking time to appear in a website browser.

Things that have improved since include:

  • Loads more website building software available today
(An example is the Namo Web Editor and Dream Weaver)
  • Many more choices with website hosting and cheaper pricing
  • Ordering Domains about to expire - process has changed and
    today favors domain based companies
  • Faster Website History Speeds for websites
  • More open source software
  • The development of PHP and mysql
  • The development of ASP 2.0 (vb .net 2.0)
  • You Tube
  • Tighter online security for websites
  • Better Search Engines (eg Google or Yahoo)

On reflection one of the best web browsers I had experienced using during the early days was Netscapes’s Browser - 3 Gold Edition.
