How do Websites Use Cookies
How do websites use cookies is generally a question asked by anyone curious about Internet Security and the effects cookies can have on your computer. Cookies are harmless and are left on your computer when you visit a website.
A cookie is like a text file that contains certain information. You may be a member of a website where you need to login and you may be asked do you want to remember the login name. If yo choose yes in many cases your login name is stored on a cookie and placed on your computer system.
You may also visit a website where it keeps track on your visits and it does this by storing a date cookie on your computer. In some cases as well a website owner lets you change the background color of the website or font types without needing you to login and create an account for this info. It knows your settings because it saves this info in a cookie.
Another way a cookie can be used is by websites who offer affiliate programs. The affiliates or in some cases these are known as Business partners sign up for a particular product and place the link of the product on the website. As soon as someone clicks on the link a cookie is placed on your computer so it can track your purchase if you decide to buy at a latter date. In turn the tracking system from the website where you purchased the item then takes note of your cookie and rewards the affiliate with payment. The success of this also depends on the expiry date set by the cookie.
In your web browser settings you can set the browser whether to accept cookies automatically, whether the browser asks you if yo want to download the cookie or you can ignore cookies all together. Hopefully by reading this article on how do websites use cookies has answered any questions you may have had about this topic.
